Field Trials

Scottish Agronomy are one of Scotland’s leading arable research organisations.

We design & manage replicated, field trials throughout the main Scottish arable areas, from the Borders to Easter Ross.

Scottish Agronomy are involved in 3 key strands of arable advice and trialing; Cereals and oilseeds, potatoes, and the energy crops sector for AD power plants.

We are an officially recognised efficacy testing organisation by the Chemicals Regulation division (CRD) of the Health and Safety Executive.

The Scottish Agronomy trialing programme:

  • Is the largest contractor in the Northern UK for the Recommended List and National List trials series for AHDB & BSPB. We screen varieties in a number of trials locations throughout Scotland
  • Offers a commercial service to plant breeders, agrochemical manufacturers, fertiliser manufacturers and allied trades
  • Develops agronomic blueprints to optimise variety performance (each variety has it’s own strengths and weaknesses, so optimum inputs of fungicides and growth regulators can differ significantly)
  • Tests fertilisers, rates and timings
  • Tests non-chemical agronomic factors (e.g. seed rates, sowing dates)
  • Screens and develops work on new crops/crop uses – e.g. rye / triticale
  • Utilises field scale experiments to test and improve precision farming techniques – e.g. variable seed rates, variable nitrogen application, headland tillage management.

Trial Design

  • Main agronomy sites located in Borders, Fife and Aberdeenshire
  • Numerous satellite sites for specific trials in member’s crops located throughout Scotland.
  • Research repeated across trials centres to gauge regional variation.
  • Various assessment criteria can be offered, for example:
    • Yield & grain quality (e.g. specific weight, screenings, skinning and grain N content)
    • Plant population
    • Disease assessment
    • Brackling/lodging scores
    • Sterility
    • Potato skin finish
    • PCN Pi/Pf
    • Virus loading

Trials Infrastructure

  • Scottish Agronomy are registered with the HSE for efficacy testing (under ORETO 307). All trials are conducted using officially recognised Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Our Senior trials team have more than 25 years' experience conducting replicated field trials
  • All trials staff are fully trained (PA1, 2, 6 etc). Senior staff are BASIS and FACTS qualified
  • Our trials equipment is state of the art – 4 Sampo plot combines with on-board weighing and sampling systems. 2 self-propelled tool carriers and drills with satellite guidance equipment. 2 x 12m sprayers & 6 x 2m plot sprayers
  • Fertiliser equipment for both overall trial application and individual plot application
  • All equipment is fully transportable and flexible to allow use both on main and satellite sites
  • Our in-house testing facilities include; grain ovens for accurate moisture content, specific weight analysis, electronic grain counters for Thousand Grain Weight. Results are recorded in ARM and/or Excel based formats
